Submission Guidelines

The Rang Yan Review welcomes original writing in English from writers, poets, critics, scholars, artists, and thinkers from anywhere in the world.

We are interested in work that takes language seriously and engages critically with the world around us. We publish literature and criticism that approaches contemporary life through questions of politics, society, history, class, labour, ecology, identity, violence, memory, culture, and collective life.

We are especially interested in writing that takes risks: formally, intellectually, politically, or aesthetically.

What We Accept

We currently accept submissions in English in the following categories:

• Poetry — individual poems, sequences, and longer poetic works
• Fiction & Prose — short stories, flash fiction, novel excerpts, experimental prose, and hybrid forms
• Essays — personal, cultural, political, philosophical, and literary essays
• Critical Writing — literary criticism, cultural criticism, theory, and essays engaging with contemporary or historical thought
• Interviews — conversations with writers, artists, scholars, activists, and other cultural figures

We are open to work that crosses these categories. Hybrid, experimental, and formally unconventional submissions are very welcome.

We also accept translations (with proof of permission from the original author).

What We Look For

We value writing with a distinct voice, intellectual substance, and a genuine relationship to its subject.

We are interested in work that:

• challenges established ways of seeing;
• connects individual experience with broader social and historical structures;
• engages seriously with political and cultural questions;
• experiments with literary or critical form;
• pays close attention to language;
• creates space for perspectives that are frequently marginalised or excluded from dominant cultural discourse.

We have a particular interest in writing concerned with class, labour, capitalism, ecology, migration, colonialism, gender, sexuality, political violence, war, technology, alienation, social reproduction, collective action, and forms of resistance. These themes are invitations rather than requirements. We are equally interested in work that approaches seemingly private or intimate experience through unexpected intellectual and aesthetic perspectives.

We do not expect writing to provide easy answers. Complexity, contradiction, ambiguity, and unresolved questions are welcome.

Originality

Please submit work that you have written yourself and that you have the right to publish.

Translations are welcome when the translator has the necessary rights to publish the translation. Please include the original author’s name and the original language with your submission.

Previously published work may be considered in exceptional circumstances, provided that you clearly indicate where and when it was previously published.

Simultaneous Submissions

Simultaneous submissions are welcome. If your work is accepted elsewhere, please let us know as soon as possible.

Format

Please submit your work as a Word document (.docx) or PDF.

For prose, essays, criticism, and interviews, please use a clear, readable typeface and standard formatting.

For poetry, please preserve the intended lineation, spacing, and page structure of the work.

Please include:

• your name;
• the title of the work;
• a short biographical note;
• your email address.

A short cover letter is welcome, though it is not required.

Length

There are no rigid length requirements. We care more about the quality and integrity of the work than about fitting into predetermined word counts.

As a general guide:

• Poetry: up to 10 poems or approximately 15 pages
• Fiction & Prose: up to 8,000 words
• Essays & Critical Writing: up to 8,000 words
• Interviews: up to 8,000 words

Longer works may be considered when their length is integral to the work itself.

Editorial Approach

The Rang Yan Review is an independent, non-commercial literary project. We do not publish according to commercial trends or market expectations.

We read submissions as literary and intellectual works rather than as commodities. We are interested in writing capable of creating a space for serious thought, disagreement, solidarity, and experimentation.

Our editorial process is selective, and acceptance depends on the quality and relevance of the work to the journal.

We aim to treat every submission with attention and respect.

Payment

The Rang Yan Review is a non-profit, independent cultural project. We currently do not pay contributors for published work.

The journal is maintained as a shared space for literary and intellectual exchange, outside commercial publishing structures. Our aim is to make room for writing that may have difficulty finding a place within commercially driven cultural institutions.
